The length of a presidential term says a lot about a regime: the longer the term, the less often the people are consulted. But the real question lies elsewhere.

The 4-year club

The continent's shortest model, inspired by the American system.

Nigeria4 yearsRenewable once
Ghana4 yearsRenewable once

Worth watching: the Ghanaian government wishes to move to 5 years.

The 5-year club

The five-year term with a maximum of two terms: the most widespread standard.

Côte d'Ivoire5 yearsMaximum 2 terms

7 years, with a limit

The seven-year term is back, but framed by a term limit.

Since 2025, the trend has been towards longer terms

  • Guinea: a five-year term was planned in the draft. Result: 7 years.
  • Chad: from 5 years, renewable once, to 7 years with no limit.
  • DR Congo: the debate on a constitutional revision is open.
It is not the length that matters most. It is the limit.
A 7-year term with guaranteed alternation can be more democratic than a 5-year term that is renewable indefinitely.

And you? What is the ideal length of a presidential term: 4, 5 or 7 years?
